Seeding Wings

“You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”  ― Annie Dillard

 On this mountain
where nothing grows
but stones I must seed
the wind with wings,
and learn to fly when
I leap into the unknown.

  1. lovely, the idea of seeding wings - reminds me of maples - how some varieties produce winged seed pods - we called helicopters - and how much fun it was to collect them in free-fall, or gather them from the ground to find a high-up spot, like balcony or roof, to throw them up and to the wind - a cascading storm! so delightful - and fun - but a right pain for the mess - *giggling madly*

I love how your poem takes something and seeds light and hope in all of this - because really, we must learn (however painful) to make/find/create/discover and share hope, as we can.

  3. I try to visualize the situation you've posed. The it helped me to think of Columbus, sailing over the edge of the world.
But you are writing metaphorically, personal road blocks and the like.
    I won't forget your
changing write here for a long while.

  7. I do love the Dillard quote, and the poem it inspired. I remember that leap. I would not be as brave now, but am glad I was then.
